Novelista inglés. Estudió leyes y artes, pero pronto se dedicó a escribir innumerables ensayos y artículos humorísticos en diversas publicaciones, para lo que se valía de una serie de seudónimos. Sus primeros escritos aparecieron en volúmenes como
El libro de los snobs (1848), que recopilaba los artículos que había publicado en el periódico satírico
Punch;
y Misceláneas (1855–1857), que incluye la novela histórica
Barry Lyndon (1844). Debe su fama sobre todo a las novelas
La feria de las vanidades (1847–48) –una mirada panorámica a las costumbres inglesas y las flaquezas humanas durante la era napoleónica–, y
Memorias de Enrique Esmond (1852), ambientada a comienzos del s. XVIII. La
Historia de Pendennis (1848–50) es una autobiografía parcialmente ficticia. Por sus cuadros narrativos de la vida inglesa contemporánea, Thackeray fue considerado en su momento el único rival de
Charles Dickens, pero esta apreciación no se conservó durante el s. XX.
